| Ghayrah | Earnest concern and sense of honour. |

| Ghazwa | A battle for the cause of Allaah in which the Prophet Muhammad himself took part. |

| Gheebah | Saying something bad (which is true) about a Muslim; backbiting. |
| | |
| Ghulool | Stealing from the war booty before its distribution. |
| | |
| Ghusl | A ritual bath required after intercourse, ejaculation, or after a woman becomes clean from her menses. |

| Haafidh | A preserver of the Qur'aan and Hadeeth. |
| | |
| Hadeeth (pl. Ahaadeeth) | A naration containing the sayings of the Messenger of Allaah, his actions, his silent approvals or any descriptions of him. |
| | |
| Hajj | Pilgrimage to Makkah (the Ka'bah). One of the pillars of Islaam. |
| | |
| Halaal | Permissible. |
| | |
| Halaqah | A circle or ring. It normally refers to a study circle. |
| | |
| Haraam | Forbidden. |
| | |
| Hasan | In the Science of Hadeeth, a good and acceptable hadeeth. |

| Hawd | The Pool (there is a pool for the Prophet on the Day of Judgement). |
| | |
| Haydh (haid) | A womans menses; menstruation. |
| | |
| Hijaab | Cover. It usually refers to a womans outer garment which covers all her body except (but can include) the hands and face. There are certain conditions that a hijaab must fulfil. |

| Hijrah | Migration, the emigration of the Prophet and his Companions from Makkah to al-Madeenah; migration of the Muslims from the lands of the disbelievers to the lands of the Muslims. |
| | |
| Ibaadah | Worship (it is a collective term for everything that Allaah loves and is pleased with, from the sayings and the actions, inwardly and outwardly). |
| | |
| Iblees | Shaytaan (Satan), the accursed. |
| | |
| Ibn (Bin) | Son of; used as a means of identification. |
| | |
| Ihsaan | To worship Allaah with the knowledge that He is Watching you; excellence. |
| | |
| Ijmaa` | Concensus, the agreement of the Companions of the Messenger upon an issue, and the agreement of the Scholars (of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa`ah) upon an issue. |
| | |
| Ijtihaad | Exerting juhd (maximum possible effort) to reach the right conclusion based on the available evidence. |
| | |
| Ikhlaas | Sincerity; worshipping Allaah with the intention to please Him alone. |
| | |
| Ilm (`ilm) | Knowledge. |
| | |
| Imaam | Leader; an eminent scholar; leader in Prayer, knowledge or fiqh; leader of a state. |
| | |
| Iqaamah | The call after the Adhaan announcing that the prayer will begin. |
| | |
| Ishaa | Night. It is usually applied to the fifth (last) daily obligatory prayer, whose time extends from the disappearance of the red light from the horizon until the middle of the night (which is half way between sunset and dawn). |

| Islaam | Submission to Allaah; the Deen chosen by Allaah for all of mankind, being the only one acceptable to Him. |

| Isnaad (Sanad) | The chain of narrators linking the collector of the saying to the person quoted. |

| Istighfaar | Seeking Allaah's forgiveness. |

| Istiwaa | Ascending; the ascending of Allaah above His Throne (in a manner that befits His Majesty). |

| Isti`aadhah | Seeking refuge with Allaah; "A`oodhu billaahi min-ash-shaytaanir rajeem"...I seek refuge with Allaah from Satan, the accursed. |

| Jaahil | An ignorant person. |

| Jaahiliyyah | The pre-Islamic period of extreme ignorance (jahl) and disbelief. |

| Jahannam | The Hell fire. |
| | |
| Jamaa`ah | The body of Muslims which is united upon adherence to the truth, which is what the Sahaabah were upon and those following them upon that. |
| | |
| Jannah | One of the names of Paradise; Heaven; Garden. |
| | |
| Jazakallah Khair | "May God grant you good” or “May God reward you for the good." |
| | |
| Jihaad | Striving and fighting to make the Word of Allaah supreme; in Allaah's cause. |
| | |
| Jinn | Another creation of Allaah, created from smokeless fire. They also will be judged for their deeds and are ordered to worship Allaah alone. |
| | |
| Jumu`ah | Friday, the Friday Prayer. |
| | |
| Junub | The state of sexual impurity, after intercourse or ejacualtion. |
| | |
| Kaafir (pl. Kuffaar) | A disbeliever. |
| | |
| Kaahin | Soothsayer. |
| | |
| Kalimah | A word; the title given to the prophet `Eesaa (Jesus), denoting that he was created by the Word of Allaah "Be!" (i.e., to be, to exist). |

| Kawthar | A river in Paradise. |

| Kha teeb | One who delivers a sermon, especially for Friday prayer. |
| | |
| Khaleefah (pl. Khulafaa) | The leader of the Muslim Ummah. |

| Khamr | Intoxicants; alcoholic beverages. |
| | |
| Khilaafah | The Muslim State which is based upon the beliefs, actions and methodolgy of the Messenger and his Companions. |

| Khuff | Leather sock. |
| | |
| Khutbah | A sermon (i.e., the Khutbah of Jumu'ah). |

| Kufr | Disbelief. |
| | |
| Lawhul-Mahfooz | The Preserved Tablet. |

| Madhhab (pl. Madhaahib) | A way or a school of thought. |

| Maghrib | It is usually applied to the fourth daily obligatory prayer, whose time is from after the sun has set until the red light disappears from the horizon. |

| Mahr | Dowry; a mandatory marriage gift given by the husband to his wife at wedding. |

| Mahram | A person who is closely related to another in such a way as to perminently prohibit them from marrying each other. This relationship results from blood, suckling, or marriage ties. A womans mahram's are her: father, grandfather, son, grandson, brother, immediate uncle (paternal and maternal), father-in-law, son-in-law, foster son (by milk), foster brother (by milk), etc. Examples of mon-mahram's: cousin (from either side), step brothers, brothers in law etc. |

| Meezaan | Balance; scales (on the Day of Judgement which will weigh the good and the evil). |

| Mimbar | Pulpit. |

| Mi`raaj | Ascension, referring specifically to the ascension of the Prophet Muhammad from Masjid al-Aqsaa to the heavens. |

| Mufti | One who gives fataawaa (Religious verdicts). |

| Muhaajir (pl. Muhaajiroon) | A Companion of the Prophet who migrated from Makkah to al-Madeenah. |

| Muhabbah | Love. |

| Muhaddith | Someone well versed in the Science of Hadeeth and all its branches and who is able to seperate the correct from the false ahaadeeth. |

| Mujaahid (pl. Mujaahidoon) | A person who performs jihaad. |

| Munaafiq (pl. Munaafiqoon) | A hypocryte; someone who outwardly holds to Islaam, but inwardly rejects and denies it. |

| Munkar | Evil; wrong; a hadeeth which is weak and contradicts more authentic hadeeths; a narrator who transmits such hadeeth. |

| Muqallid | One who practises taqleed. |
| | |
| Musallaa | A place designated for Salaah; the grounds wherethe `eed or janaazah prayers are performed. |
| | |
| Mushaf | The printed Qur'aan. |
| | |
| Mushrik | A pagan, polytheist, one who associates partners with Allaah, in either his beliefs or actions. |
| | |
| Mustafaa | The title given to the Prophet Muhammad, being Allaah's chosen one. |
| | |
| Mu`min (pl. Mu`minoon) | A believer. |
| | |
| Nabee | Prophet. |
| | |
| Nameemah | Spreading what people have said in order to spread evil and corruption. |
| | |
| Nifaaq | Hypocrisy. |
| | |
| Nikaah | The marriage contract (also sexual intercourse). |
| | |
| Niyyah | Intention. |
| | |
| Nubuwah | Prophethood. |
| | |
| Qabr | Grave. |

| Qadaa | Allaah's ordainment of everything in creation. |

| Qadar | Allaah's pre-decree and pre-ordainment of the creation. |

| Qibla | The direction one faces during Prayer (i.e., towards the Ka'bah in Makkah). See Qiblah |

| Qiblah | The direction one faces during Prayer (i.e., towards the Ka'bah in Makkah). |

| Qiyaas | Making anologies between two similar matters, in order to give them the same ruling and status. |

| Qudusee | Holy. hadeeth qudusi: a hadeeth that the Prophet relates from his Lord (Allaah). |

| Qur'aan | The Words of Allaah revealed to Muhammad, the recital of which is an act of worship. |

| Quraysh | The noble `Arabtribe to which the Prophet belonged to. |

| Radiyallaahu `anhu | May Allah be pleased with him (said after the mentioning of the Sahaabah). |
| | |
| Rahmah | Mercy (of Allaah). |
| | |
| Rak`aah (pl. Rak'aat) | Unit of Prayer. |
| | |
| Ramadaan | The ninth month of the Islamic calander in which it is obligatory to fast. It is also the month in which the Qur'aan was revealed. |

| Rasool | Messenger. |
| | |
| Riyaa' | An act of worship undertaken by someone to be seen and praised by others and not purely for Allaah; showing off. |

| Rizq | Provision. |
| | |
| Rooh | The soul or spirit. Sometimes referred to the angel Jibraa`eel (Gabriel). |

| Rukoo` | The bowing posture performed during the Salaah. |
| | |
| Saabiqoon | The foremost people; the forerunners. |

| Sabr | Patient perseverence; abstinence. |
| | |
| Sada qah | Alms, charity; obligatory or recommended type. |

| Sadooq | Honest; trustworthy. |
| | |
| Sahaabah (sing. Sahaabee) | The Companions of the Prophet. |

| Saheeh | Authentic, a hadeeth fulfilling all the conditions of authenticity. |

| Saheehain (saheehayn) | The two 'Saheehs' i.e., Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim. |

| Sajdah (Sujood) | The prostration posture preformed during Salaah. |

| Sakeenah | Tranquility. |

| Salaah | The prayer. |

| Salaam | The prescribed greetings of the Muslims, "Assalaamu `alaykum", may Allaah protect you and keep you safe. Also means peace. |

| Salaf | Predecessors; the early Muslims; the Muslims of the first three generations; the Companions, the Successors and their successors. |

| Sunan | Plural of Sunnah. |

| Sunnah | In the broadest sense the entire religion which the Prophet came with i.e., all matters of belief, rulings, manners and actions which were conveyed by the Companions. It also includes those matters which the Prophet established by his sayings, actions and tacit approval. |

| Sutrah | Barrier, screen, covering; an object in front of the place of prostration, people may not pass between the person praying and the sutrah, but may pass beyond the sutrah. |

| Taabi`ee (pl. Taabi`een) | The Successors, that is the successors of the Companions, the next generation after the Companions. |

| Taaghoot | One who goes beyond the limits (set by Allaah); one who is worshipped besides Allaah and is pleased with it. |

| Tafseer | Explanation ( of the Qur'aan). |

| Tahajjud | Voluntary, recommended prayer between the compulsary prayers of 'Ishaa' and Fajr. |

| Tahleel | "Laa ilaaha illallaah"...There is none worthy of worship except Allaah (alone). |

| Tahmeed | "Al-hamdu lillaah"...All the thanks and praise belongs to Allaah. |

| Takbeer | "Allaahu Akbar"...Allaah is greater. |

| Taqleed | To follow someone's opinion; blind folowing; to follow a Madhhab. |

| Taqwaa | Fearing Allaah and revering Him |

| Targheeb. | Arouse interest, awake desire; to mention matters that cause one to desire to do good, seek the reward of such actions and strive to attain Paradise, etc. |

| Tarheeb. | Frightening; to mention matters that cause one to abandon the perpetration of bad deeds and fear the consequences and the Fire, etc. |

| Tasbeeh | "Subhaanallaah"...Allaah is far from any imperfections. |

| Tasleem | Saying salaam, especially to end the prayer. |

| Taufeeq | The success conferred to the slave by Allaah. |

| Tawaaf | Circling the Ka'bah seven times as an act of worship. |

| Tawakkul. | Reliance; reliance upon Allaah through both entusting affairs to Him as well as adopting the causes that Allaah has measured out. |

| Tawbah | Turning to Allaah in repentence. |
| | |
| Tawheed | The Oneness and Uniqueness of Allaah with respect to His Lordship, His Names and Attributes and in His right to be worshipped alone. |

| Tayyib | Good; pure; clean. |

| Tazkiyah | The testificatin [often a scholar], that another person [often another scholar] is good, trustworthy and competent. |

| Thawb | A long garment of clothing that resembles robes. |

| Witr | Literally it means that which is an odd number. However it is normally used for a prayer that is of an odd number of Rak`aat that is performed as the last prayer (of the night). |

| Wudoo | Ablution (with water). It consists of rinsing the mouth and nose, blowing the nose, washing the face, washing the forearms to the elbows, wiping over the head (including ears) and washing the feet up to (including) the ankles. |

| Yaqeen | Certainty; being certain about the truth of Islaam and the Sunnah. |

| Zaahid | A person who practises zuhd. |

| Zakaah | Charity that is an obligation on anyone who has wealth over and above a certain limit over which a year has passed. |
